What Happens In Vegas - 3 BDK's

Genre: Comedy
Released: 2008

Yet, another movie to take place in a CITY that I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO! Well, it partly takes place there. Anytime a movie is set in Vegas, you are bound to have a good time. Let's take a look at some great films that have happened in Vegas; Ocean's 11, Leaving Las Vegas, 21, Snake Eyes, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Vegas Vacation, etc. I really need to go to this city, but that is the best part about going to the movies. You actually get to see parts of the world that you haven't seen yet. I just love when films take place in countries like Ireland, Scotland, etc. In particular, there was a movie this year called In Bruges that took place in BRUGES, BELGIUM. WHERE THE HELL IS THAT PLACE?? I had never even heard of it, but now I really want to go. The movie was a freaking tourist advertisement riddled with violence, bad language and drugs. Whoops, I just got off on a tangent there. Let's get back to the movie at hand. What Happens In Vegas stars Ashton Kutcher (The Butterfly Effect, Just Married), Cameron Diaz (There's Something About Mary, Vanilla Sky), Rob Corrdry (Harold & Kumar Escape to Guantanamo Bay, "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart), Lake Bell (Over Her Dead Body) and Treat Williams (some crappy b-rated b-s that you can probably see on Straight to DVD).

The plot line to the film revolves around two characters who essentially have become felted in life. Jack (Kutcher) has just been fired from his job by his freaking dad (Treat Williams) and Joy (Diaz) has just been dumped by her boyfriend of five years at his surprise birthday party. Now, Jack and Joy have never met before, but they both decide to hit Vegas for the weekend because they want to get some kind of joy back in their lives. Jack brings his best friend with him (Corrdry) and Joy brings hers (Bell) just to rock out. When both Joy and Jack both get accidentally booked in the same hotel room, they finally meet and let's just say, they get drunk and end up accidentally marrying each other that night. Obviously, they didn't mean to. They both agree it is the right choice to get the marriage annulled, but shocker, Kutcher hits the jackpot in Vegas and wins $3,000,000. Now, Diaz obviously doesn't want to divorce him, unless he will split the money. They go before a judge (Dennis Miller) and he basically tells them that their money will be frozen until they serve a sentence of 6 months of HARD MARRIAGE, where they will have to learn to be together, even though they now hate each others guts. See, it sounds easy because they can just fake it, but they are forced to see marriage counselor (Queen Latifah) once a week to check on their status. Well, you guessed it, the rest of the movie is Jack and Joy battling it and that is where the comedy comes from.

Overall, except for the horribly dreadful and cheesy beginning, which contained one of the worst montage sequences I have ever seen, the movie does have a lot of funny moments with Kutcher and Diaz. I really enjoyed them together on screen as the fighting married couple who are forced to be together. I actually didn't think they would be able to pull it off, but they did a very decent job and really made you believe that they hated each other.

When I mentioned the beginning montage sequence, I really meant what I said. There is a montage where they are drinking and having a good time and it looked like a five year old put it together. The dialogue seemed completely unnatural and just very forced. It almost felt like they were trying to rush you through everything until they finally sleep with each other. Yes, that is the point of a montage, but it was done very poorly.

I had a problem with the cheesy ending as well, but you really can't be too nit picky with these types of films.

I honestly feel like this is a perfect rental, hence the 3 BDK rating. It isn't a horrible film but it is not worth spending your money on to see in theatres. That should be left for Speed Racer or Iron Man. Go check those out and wait a couple of months for this on DVD.
