Made of Honor - 2.5 BDK's

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Released: 2008

A lot of people have referring to this movie as a man's version of My Best Friend's Wedding, which starred Julia Roberts. I just remember seeing all the promotional material for this film and thinking how stupid it was. There was this big standee-type poster that had the cast on it and then a missing hole where anyone could stick their stupid head in and act like they were part of the cast. I guess it is smart promotionally because anytime anyone does that and then shows it to their friends, family and whoever else, the movie gets free publicity. It just seemed kind of cheesy to me. Now, when it comes to Patrick Dempsey, I know there is a lot of craze around this guy. I honestly have never seen the show, "Grey's Anatomy," but I guess he goes by the name of McDreamy. I don't really know anything about that. The first real time I encountered this fella was in a little film called Enchanted, which for some reason had over a 90% on rottentomatoes.com and I could never fathom as to why. The movie just didn't really appeal to me I guess. It is not like I don't give movies like that a chance, I just thought it was extremely over-hyped. Getting back to Made of Honor, the film stars Patrick Dempsey, Michelle Monoghan (Gone Baby Gone, The Heartbreak Kid), Sydnay Pollack (directed Tootsie, Out of Africa) and Kevin McKidd (Hannibal Rising, "Rome").

I think every guy in the world would like to be Tom's (Dempsey) shoes. This guy has basically the perfect life. He is the person that invented that little coffee holder that you use so you don't burn your hand when you are holding the cup. He gets like ten cents for every single one of those used. Pretty sick deal he has going on! So, the guy doesn't even need to work. He also has the greatest game of all time. He has girls on a rotation and he just bangs pretty much one girl a day and he has rules about not seeing them more than 1 day in a row. Just to rewind for a second, so I can introduce his best friend, the movie opens up at Cornell University and Tom goes into a room looking for a particular girl and it ends up being her friend, Hannah (Monaghan). Hannah gets all bitter that Tom climbed in bed with her and she says she will not sleep with him no matter what. She has heard about his antics. Well, ten years later, they are best friends. Now, since they are friends, they have never really hooked up. He has never really thought of her in that way since that night. Here comes the drama. Right as they are getting close with one another, she has to leave for a trip to Scotland. To make a long story short, she ends up meeting a guy over there named Colin (McKidd) and they are slated to be married. She drops this news on Tom when she gets back to the states and asks him to her made of honor. It is at this point that he realizes that she is the one for him and that they need to be together, but the drama is that he has to plan her entire wedding out and deal with her three other bridesmaids, one of which Tom has already slept with. Let the drama begin.

Overall, the movie is unbelievably predictable and EXTREMELY cheesy at times. You just sit there in your seat and go "OH COME ON!!!" The ending of the film is a perfect example of that. That only happens in the movies. Well, it is true. The stuff you see in this film is so far fetched, it almost pisses you off. I did enjoy watching Dempsey and Monaghan on screen together. They had excellent chemistry, but everything was just too easy and forced. I felt like I was watching a fairy tale or something. It just didn't seem realistic at all.

I know this is the kind of movie that girls will like, but the woman next to me watching it absolutely hated it. See, I am a dude, but I can appreciate a great chick flick every once in a while, but there have just been some really bad one's recently. Made of Honor isn't horrible, but it isn't good either.

The movie is saved by it's gross out humor, which I love. If you want to see the king of gross-out humor, go see Harold and Kumar: Escape From Guantanmo Bay. That movie will blow your mind, but you can also find some pretty crude stuff in this film. Let's just say there is a grandmother in the film who takes pride in wearing her glow in the dark, anal beads.

I give the film 2.5 because it does have some good laughs and it one of those movies where you kind of pick sides as to who you want to get the girl. The woman next to me wanted Dempsey to lose the girl, but I kind of wanted him to get her back. You will have to see it find out, but don't waste your money in theatres. Just check it out when it comes out on rental or cable, hence the 2.5 BDK rating.
