I just came back from an extremely advanced screening of this, which actually does not open for another month. Obviously, if you are reading this review right now, it has finally hit theatres. So, I was walking out of the theatre after seeing this movie and the publicist people asked me what I thought about it. I told them that I really found it be very funny and it was definitely a sleeper film. Then, I turned around and sarcastically said that I could have used one more penis shot. Now, here is the deal with this film. It contains some of the most awkward male nudity that I have ever seen. I do love how there is a double standard in our society. Women get naked all the time on camera and it is no big deal. It is actually a little bit silly. But when you see a man naked on camera, it is like you are seeing something so horrific and unpleasant. You normally do not get male nudity in films and I myself am ok with that, but for some reason the male nudity in this film was really funny. There must have been at least 4 clear shots of this dude's dong. I have no idea why they decided to show it so much, but it was actually pretty funny. My brother was reading online that some theatres are actually not playing the film because of the male nudity.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall comes to you from Judd Apatow, who produced the film. You know him because he has been involved in the only real funny movies to come out in the past five years or so; The 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad, Knocked Up, etc. He has done a couple of duds though; Talladega Nights and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Now, the real person behind this film is the lead star; Jason Segel ("How I Met Your Mother" and Knocked Up). Where did this dude come from? He kind of has that same Seth Rogen type feel to him; kind of a chubby looking guy who is absolutely hilarious and gets all the hot girls. This guy gave one hell of a performance and wrote one hell of a script. The film also stars Kristen Bell ("Heroes", Pulse), Bill Hader (Hot Rod, Superbad), Mila Kunis (she does the voice of Meg Griffen on "The Family Guy" and she also starred in "That '70s Show"), Jonah Hill (Superbad, Knocked Up), Paul Rudd (Anchorman, Knocked Up) and Russel Brand (Penelope).
What is so good about the movie is that they took a VERY SIMPLE story line and made a great film. It is what is inside the film; i.e. dialogue, acting. The basic plot line revolves around a guy named Peter Bretter (played by Jason Segel). He is dating one of the hottest girls around, Sarah Marshall (Bell) who happens to also be a TV star on the latest show; CRIMESCENE. She stars along side Billy Baldwin. Peter actually does the music for the show. The movie opens up and we meet Peter in his apartment enjoying his daily routine of eating a humongous bowl of cereal. He sits down to watch TV and they are airing an Access Hollywood special on his girlfriend and her new TV show. She actually calls Peter right after the show ends and says that she is coming over. He freaks out and starts cleaning the place, only to realize that she has come over to break up with him. As he stands there butt naked, and we the audience get about 3 awkward shots of his penis, she tells him that she has been cheating on him and that it is over. He is obviously distraught about this and seeks help from his buddy Brian (Hader) who tells him to take vacation. Peter remembers his girlfriend saying a good place to go would be Hawaii. He takes a trip there and shocker, Sarah is staying at the exact hotel he checks into. Now, it is extremely awkward. Peter deals with it though and starts seeing the hotels customer service rep; Rachel (played by Mila Kunis). This obviously creates tension with Sarah and Peter and the awkwardness begins. Don't let the plot be the deciding factor on seeing this movie. It is all in the dialogue and the jokes.
Overall, like I said above, this is the sleeper comedy of the year. You will definitely laugh your ass. I thought it was so funny when they would show clips of Sarah Marshall's TV show; "Crimescene." It was pretty much a CSI show and Billy Baldwin was exactly the same character as David Carusso, with his terribly bad and funny one-liners. It turns out though, from looking at www.imdb.com that the writer of the film, Jason Segel, used to star on that TV show. That is obviously him taking a jab at that. There was another joke made later on in the film that dealt with people dying on cell phones and how bad of a movie idea that would be. I am guessing that was a reference to some horrible horror film but I couldn't pick up on which one it was.
Though the movie had some awkward dialogue scenes, I would say that almost every joke worked. The only awkward character was Paul Rudd. He played a surfer in the film, but it just felt like a lot of his jokes fell flat. I am sure that was the way they intended it to be, but I am sure not sure why. They weren't that funny. Jonah Hill had a pretty awkward part as well, playing the stalker of Sarah Marshall's new boyfriend, Aldous Snow (who was played by Russel Brand). He was a big time British rock singer and Hill's character was totally obsessed with him and would follow him everywhere.
This Jason Segel guy is definitely going to be the next Seth Rogen. This is exactly what he did. Rogen acted in a couple of movies and then wrote his own script; Superbad and his career just freaking took off.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is definitely one of the more crude films you will see this year, but you will be laughing extremely hard. I guarantee that. This movie is definitely going to be hailed by critics. I am giving it a 4.5 BDKs because it is definitely worth a good theatre viewing. This is one of the those movies that will be great to see with a large audience that laughs a lot. You are bound to have a good time. |
