Genre: Thriller/Suspense
Released: 2008
This movie is a perfect example of an interesting plotline mixed in with some really cheesy and sappy moments. I like to see a film like this every once in a while. Like this? You ask? Well, I mean a sexual thriller. I would say the last good sexual thriller I saw was Unfaithful and I think we can all agree it was pretty damn awesome seeing Diane Lane at that age with that body. Well, enough of that. Is it me or has this movie Deception been completely under advertised. I think I may have seen two trailers for it and everyone I mention the title too has never even heard of the film. Considering the big cast behind the film and the fact that it is being marketed as a sleek, sexual thriller, I would think that more people would be interested in seeing this. Mark my words for this movie. It will BOMB at the box office. I am predicting a $6-$10 million weekend for this film. Deception stars Hugh Jackman (X-Men Trilogy, Swordfish), Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace) and Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain). Williams also used to be married to Heath Ledger, who is going to be completely bad-ass in The Dark Knight; and yes, I thought that before the dude died.
I need to be fragile when giving this plotline because I don't want to give anything away. The movie opens and we meet Jonathan McQuarry (McGregor), who is an auditor that goes around to companies to make sure their business are being ran legitimately and legally. One night, while McQuarry is crunching away with numbers, a guy by the name of Wyatt Bose (Jackman) comes into the conference room and they become really good friends, while smoking up in the conference room. Now, you have to consider the circumstances here. Wyatt Bose is a lawyer at this firm that Jonathan is auditing. They start hanging out a lot and one day, Bose and McQuarry get their cell phones mixed up and Bose leaves for a trip to London. McQuarry starts getting all of Bose's phone calls, which are calls to have sex. Bose is part of a sex club where business professionals just call each other at night when they are horny to have sex with each other. It's pretty wild stuff. One of the girls that McQuarry meets, S (Williams), strikes him in a different way. He actually falls for her even though she tells him not too. She disappears and McQuarry starts getting questioned for her disappearance. While all of this happening, Bose has different plans. You will see what happens. There are a ton of twists and turns.
Overall, the movie was pretty entertaining. It really didn't strike me as anything new. It was kind of interesting to see Jackman in this sort of role. He was just a complete bad-ass. If you are guy, you are going to really enjoy this movie, because there are just montages of McGregor meeting up with really good looking women, except for one of them, and just having the time of his life. One of the women is actually played by Natasha Henstridge (Species).
This is one of those movies that you could almost just consider a popcorn flick. It is fun to watch but it really isn't anything special. It is pretty damn predictable and you can see everything coming from a mile away. I did like some of the clever twists with certain deaths and such.
I feel that this movie is your perfect rental on a Saturday night when nothing else is playing in theatres. I wouldn't really recommend shelling out any money for the movie in theatres. There are much better films you can see this weekend! |
