Baby Mama - 3.5 BDK's

Genre: Comedy
Released: 2008

I think I might be in love with Tina Fey. I know she's an older woman, but for some reason, I just love everything about her. She is hilarious, smart and pretty. She was always hilarious on Saturday Night Live and wrote one of the best chick flicks of all time; Mean Girls. It was the simple high school popular film that ended up being so well written that even dudes were like; yeah that was really good for a girl's movie. When the trailers first started emerging for Baby Mama, I think all of us could agree that it looked absolutely hilarious. It did kind of remind me a little bit of Juno and I was worried about it coming out at this time after all of the Juno hype; but honestly, the only thing it has in common with that film is that fact that it deals with pregnancy. Baby Mama stars Tina Fey, Amy Poehler (Mean Girls, SNL), Steve Martin (The Jerk, Cheaper by the Dozen), Dax Shepherd (Let's Go To Prison, Punk'd), Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Ghostbusters) and Romany Malco (The 40 Year Old Virgin- he worked in the Circuit City-look alike with Steve Carell, Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd).

Now listen. I need to keep this plot line short and concise. I will warn you though that the plot you have learned from the trailers are correct but there are a TON OF GREAT surprises that will keep you entertained throughout the entire film. We meet Kate (Fey) at the beginning of the film and learn that she has a one in a million chance of having children because of her oddly shaped uterus. Her life is actually great though, considering the fact that she is the VP of building for Round Earth; an organic food company, which is taking off. She drives a nice car and lives in a great place. Here's the problem. She is thirty-seven years old, single and desperately wants to have a child. She seeks out options like artificial insemination and adoption, but neither of those work. She ends up finding a service where she would have a surrogate mother carry her child. She goes to this agency (Chaffee Bicknell), ran by Chaffee (Weaver). She sets her up with Angie (Poehler), who for lack of a better term is a white trash middle aged woman who has been in a common law marriage with Carl (Shepard) for a long time. The agency runs a background check on her and she turns out clean. Well, here's where it starts. Angie agrees to go through with the process after interviewing other woman who have the same problems as Kate. The drama starts when Angie and Carl get into an argument and Angie ends up having to live with Kate during the pregnancy process. Let the funny begin. By the way, that is really only a small part of the plot. There is a ton more, but it would ruin the surprises if I say anything.

Overall, this movie was a lot funnier than I thought it would be, and I was already expecting it to be pretty damn funny. The person who steals the entire show is Steve Martin's character; Barry. He plays Tina Fey's boss in the film and he is this guy who is all in touch with his Chi. He loves to focus on the environment and meditate. What makes him so funny is that he has this ridiculous pony tale and some of the things he says and does will make you die laughing. Just remember the "5 minutes of uninterrupted eye contact" scene. I was almost in tears.

Tina Fey was great as always. I really thought she had written this film, but apparently the director, Michael McCullers wrote and directed it. It did seem like her style of humor. Her and Poehler were unbelievable together. They really do have great on-screen chemistry, considering they are practically best friends in real life.

I just really liked how just when the film started to get sappy, they would throw in some really off-color humor that really threw you off. Like, if things started to seem all happy and go lucky, they would throw in some really awkward dialogue to soften that cheesiness.

I am tweenering on a rental/matinee with this film. If your girlfriend is excited to see it, then it is worth a matinee. It is not one of those movies that HAS to be seen in theatres. It could be enjoyed as a DVD rental as well. It is just a fun and "cute" movie. It is a great date movie and guys and woman will both love it.
